Helena and Wendy
2010 Chief Residents
Born and raised in tropical countries (Helena is from Venezuela and Wendy is from the Philippines), never in our wildest dreams did we think we would survive three bitter winters in Chicago doing a pediatrics residency. Now, as chief residents, we are at the helm of the residency program...an endeavor that we think surpasses the coldest winter that Chicago can whip up.
We believe that working at UIC as chiefs is the perfect environment for us to morph into the fantastic multi-tasking individuals that chiefs are known to be. The Department of Pediatrics at UIC is an academic and administrative machine that will define our work as educators, managers, coordinators, schedulers (emphasis on this one!), advocates for residents, spokespeople for the department, in-house counselors for residents, trouble-shooters and hopefully, mentors. Working in the midst of 50 residents, 40 faculty members, 12 pediatrics divisions, 9 medical departments, and hundreds of nursing and ancillary staff, we are sure to have many exciting days ahead.
At the top of all this flurry of activity is education and teaching. Despite the noted trend that chief residents have been given more administrative work in the past years, we are looking forward to a year of learning with the residents and faculty. The challenge for us is to make resident learning a part of everyday life, while making it fun and fulfilling. As an aside, we also plan to build up a pantry in the residents’ lounge...no pediatrics resident should ever go hungry while on call.
J. Alpert and colleagues published in Pediatrics in 2000 that pediatric chief residents were more likely to be leaders in their professional futures. Whether this will hold true for us, we are ready for the challenge to do our best. However, we have to say that the prediction of us being professional leaders within the next years sends shivers down our spines!
