PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Open to students who have completed the M3 Core Clerkship in Surgery.






INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: The Burn Unit has an 6-bed ICU and a 12-bed stepdown section. The unit has 280-300 admissions a year (both adults and children ). The Burn Unit offers an excellent opportunity to learn shock, resuscitation, fluid and electrolytes, respiratory management, nutritional care, burn wound care, excisional surgery and skin grafting, and outpatient management of small burns. Didactic lectures are given twice weekly by attendings. The student will be given intern-like responsibility and participate in work-up and management of the burn patient under direct supervision of attendings and housestaff. The student is also given exposure to basic and clinical research.
