PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed the M3 Core Clerkships in Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynecology.

NOTE:
Rotation is available at both University of Illinois Chicago College of Medicine Medical Center. It is suggested that at least a four week duration is preferable, but an 8 week program is acceptable.

PURPOSE:
This senior elective in neonatology is geared to provide experience in neonatal medicine. The student will get both clinical and academic experience with instruction in patient care. The major goal of the program is to familiarize the student with normal and abnormal adaptation of the newborn, to recognize various clinical entities peculiar to newborns (hyaline membrane disease, congenital heart disease, meconium aspiration, syndromes, genetic diseases, etc.) and their management.

COMPETENCIES:
Students will have the opportunity to learn skills of intubation, resuscitation, neonatal ventilation (conventional and high frequency ventilators, surfactant instillation, etc.), and umbilical catheterization. Opportunities for procedures include exchange transfusion, lumbar puncture, and chest tube insertion. By the completion of the elective period, the student will have learned neonatal resuscitation and management of sick neonates.

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
Each student will be working under the supervision of fellows who will be supervised by an attending. The student will have the same patient care responsibility as the first-year resident. The student will be given sufficient responsibility of patient care with the objective that they will have the opportunity of managing the patient under supervision. The student is also expected to take night calls to work along with a resident on call. In addition, students are expected to participate in the educational rounds, seminars, and journal club activities of the Division. Students will have the opportunity to go on neonatal transfers and to follow their patients during surgery.

Pediatrics E&M Conference (E&M = evaluation and management):  This is an educational enhancement specifically designed for the M4 student in Pediatrics - a case-based learning session designed to focus on issues that you likely will face as residents.  All students on pediatrics electives will gather at 8 am every Thursday of their rotation in 1208 CSB (12th floor conference room).
