As part of the M4 curriculum, all students are required to complete the Specialties Course which includes 19 weeks of the following: Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Otolaryngology, Radiology, Urology, and either Senior Forum or a Selective (selected from the approved electives).  Students may take any specialty in the M3 year following completion of the prerequisites.  To insure maximum flexibility in the M4 year, the curriculum is designed in two or four-week blocks, that students may take in any order. Students will not be required to take all 19 weeks in a single block.

Anesthesiology: 2 Weeks
Dermatology: 2 Weeks
Emergency Medicine: 2 Weeks
Neurology: 2 Weeks
Ophthalmology: 1 Week
Orthopaedics: 2 Weeks
Otolaryngology: 2 Weeks
Radiology: 2 Weeks
Urology: 2 Weeks

Selective 2 Weeks*

*As recommended and approved by the M3/M4 Curriculum Subcommittee, COM students are required to complete a 2 week selective experience as part of the required 19 weeks of instruction and credit in the in the Specialties Course.

This 2 week Selective Requirement can be fulfilled by completing one of the following:

  1) Senior Forum. 

  2) A Selective chosen from the approved electives.  A selective is defined as a 2 week approved clinical or non-clinical elective from the UIC-COM On-Line Clinical Experiences Catalog.  An approved clinical or non-clinical 4 week elective may only be modified to 2 weeks with the approval of the Program Director.  

  3) A Research Elective. Students may apply 2 weeks from an approved elective to this requirement. Please note: Upon completion, a final project, academic paper, abstract or presentation must be submitted to the Associate Dean for Curriculum for review to receive a final grade. 

  4) A Self-Designed Elective (including domestic and international externships.) 

ASSESSMENT:  Student performance is evaluated by department members using the standard College of Medicine Student Performance Evaluation form. Grading is Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. Completion of an on-line "Final Course Evaluation" for each Specialty is required before receiving a final grade.
