PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed Medicine or Family Medicine core clerkships.
PURPOSE: The Dermatology clerkship is designed to provide a basic knowledge of common skin lesions seen in practice. Students will be trained in how to perform a thorough skin examination, recognize improvement or deterioration in a dermatosis and in wound healing and learn to counsel and instruct patients and their families regarding ca use, management, prognosis, and prevention of skin disease. Student clerks spend two weeks either at the University of Illinois Hospital or WSVA.
COMPETENCIES: By the end of the clerkship, a student should be able to:
-Perform a thorough skin examination (including hair, nails, and mucous membranes);
-Describe skin lesions using precise dermatologic language;
-Formulate a differential diagnosis based on morphology of skin lesions;
-Construct a logical treatment plan to relieve anxiety, discomfort, disfigurement, and disability caused by the skin problem;
-Recognize improvement or deterioration in a dermatosis and in wound healing;
-Recognize and diagnose life-threatening dermatosis and understand the available therapeutic options for these life threatening diseases.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: For all students at all the locations, Wednesdays are reserved for lectures, tutorials, seminars, and Dermatology Clinical Conference (i.e., Grand Rounds), learning about common as well as rare skin diseases, cutaneous manifestations of underlying systemic disease and dermatologic therapeutics. Students will attend two two-hour lectures and one video tape presentations. In addition, students are as ked to read in-depth about the topic s seen each clinic day. All lecture material is available on the Dermatology website.
ASSESSMENT: Evaluations are made on the basis of both resident and attending staff evaluations. The summary evaluation is reviewed by the department chairman, and his/her designate. There resident's evaluation is made on the basis of the student's daily clinic performance as witnessed by the resident to whom the stud ent is assigned. The attending physicians' evaluation is made on the basis of their interactions with the student during clinics and lectures. At the conclusion of the two-week rotation, students will be given an examination based on the basics of dermatology.
Completion of an on-line College of Medicine "Final Course Evaluation" is required before receiving a final grade.
