Prerequisites and Placement in the Curriculum: Open to all M4 students who have completed their core rotations in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, General Surgery, OB/Gyne and Psychiatry.
Purpose: To introduce the senior medical student to the specialty of Emergency Medicine and participate in care of emergent patients.
Competencies: Student will be expected to learn:
1) how to approach the emergent patient and recognize immediate life threats
2 ) to perform a focused history and physical exam
3) to formulate a differential diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment plan for a patient
4) to arrange an appropriate disposition plan for the emergent patient based on evaluation and testing
5) to perform basic bedside procedures pertinent to emergency medical care
Instructional Features: Students will work with attendings and senior residents during clinical shifts including days, swings, and night shifts. There will be directed readings on common EM topics including chest pain, abdominal pain, altered mental status, and trauma. The text used will be Emergency Medicine: An approach to problem solving by Hamilton, Strange et al. All students will be expected to attend the EM conferences at their institution, generally held on Tuesdays or Thursdays. All students must attend a site specific orientation prior to doing clinical shifts.
Assessment: Students will be evaluated on their clinical performance in the ED and a written evaluation/ treatment plan of an interesting emergent patient seen during the elective. Grading will be Pass/Fail. Completion of an on-line College of Medicine "Final Course Evaluation" is required before receiving a final grade.
