INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: The Medicine Sub-Internship at Lutheran General is offered to all students in their fourth year of medical school. The sub-intern will work six days per week, starting at 7 a.m. and finishing around 5 p.m. The sub-intern will be on call every fourth night with their assigned team and function much like an intern. They will admit no more than three patients per call night, and will be allowed to carry no more than a maximum of eight patients on their service. They will be responsible for all facets of care for the patients under the supervision of a senior resident. The student will be expected to write daily notes, perform a history and physical on all their patients, write orders and participate in discharge planning. The sub-intern will also be required to go to all lectures and conferences that team members attend. These include work rounds, teaching rounds, noon conferences, CPC and Grand Rounds. The student will be responsible for having all notes and orders co-signed by either their senior resident or attending. The student will be required to see their patients on Saturday and have Sunday off unless their team is on call. If their team is on call Sunday, they are not required to be in the hospital on Saturday. Students will have a night call room available for them upon request. Teaching Rounds attendings, senior, and junior residents will attend a formal sit-down evaluation meeting at the end of each month in order to provide feedback to each other and the student.
